LEROY AND MARY
LOU PETERS
Winter and Spring 2003-2004
CUBA
Leroy took a group
of eleven from Far Hills Baptist Church of Dayton, Ohio
once again in the summer of 2003. The group spent time in Havana with the church of Pastor Vicente Calvo, then worked at the Baptist
camp just outside Matanzas,
Cuba, about an hour and a half east of Havana.
Once again, Leroy
obtained a religious visa so he could legally teach the Bible in various
churches. Without that type visa, it is
illegal to preach in any church in Cuba. The Lord has given an open door to teach in a number
of churches and other settings.
We are especially
interested in Alexis and Yudit Hernandez, a couple from Vicente Calvo’s church. Alexis is now in his second year of
seminary and is doing quite
well. This young couple is very servant minded
and want to go into the pastorate.
During his seminary time, he is assigned to pastor a small church that
has no permanent pastor. He is showing much maturity and the congregation is
very happy with him. Remember to pray for the Hernandez family. They have two
daughters; Yudlin, 11 years, and Yunay, 8 years.
The work of New
Tribes Mission among indigenous peoples throughout the world has now
been presented in many churches in western Cuba. We are desiring that the
Lord move some out to enter the Latin training in Mexico or Venezuela to prepare for this specialized work. Leroy will
travel once again in late 2004 to revisit the churches where he has contacts.
Pray for the
Brethren in Cuba to have a vision for the lost in other lands. Part of the ministry of
the local church is to send out laborers into a wonderfully white field that is
ready for the harvest.
VENEZUELA
Leroy wanted to
send a group to Betijoque where New Tribes Mission of Venezuela has a national training center.
He was not able to get a group together but did send Robert and Brenda
Hartshorn from Dayton, Ohio.
Robert is a manager of an electrical company which is exactly the expertise the
training center needed. They had an apartment under construction and needed to
wire it, but didn’t know what to do.
Robert was able to
get the work done and left with everyone praising the Lord that the right man
went down. His school teacher wife was a great help to Robert.
The Hartshorns
were part of a group that Leroy took to the same location in 2002. The Lord is
good!
CONFERENCES,
MEETINGS, AND PRAISE
We are starting a
Latin church in the Dayton, Ohio area. About twenty-five attend on Sunday mornings and various ones are
in our discipleship class on Thursday evenings. Also, Leroy is working with
four men to mature them for leadership in the church. Pray for this work that
the Lord has started.
Praise: that Mary Lou’s health
has remained steady. She has chronic problems and her medicines help her to
stay about the same since our last letter. Thanks for your prayers.
Praise: for the good church
meetings and missions conferences during 2003.
Praise: for the many who have
prayed and given financially to us during our twenty five years in the
ministry.
MEXICO
Leroy led a large
group to Galeana, Mexico in August. The group did maintenance work for the camp and learned some
skills they previously didn’t have. Trips were taken to various villages to
evangelize, and the group had opportunities to see a number of people saved.
The experience was good and the group grew in their service to the Lord.
One of the
villages called “Joyas de Agua Fria” (Jewels of Cold Water), located in the
isolated mountains of “Sierra Madre Oriental” (a difficult place to get to) was where the team spent a day. It was
quite an experience for everyone. The vehicles couldn’t make it up the steep
road, so Leroy needed to shuttle the team to the village.
Once in the
village, we invited people to come to the meeting. A good number came and
listened to our program and the preaching. Surprisingly, some men showed up.
Normally, it is hard to get the men to attend. This was a great mission effort.
